Hello there!
Peter Knight
and John Tindal are the people behind Archie & Richie Ltd,
which created "A Room in the West End", a Scottish BYOW
bistro on William Street in the heart of Edinburghs bustling
West End.
The concept
was initially created at the old disused "Chinese Home Cooking"
restaurant in Argyle Place, Marchmont, Edinburgh which was turned
into "A Room in Marchmont" Scottish BYOW bistro.
We now operate
two restaurants, A Room in the West End is as it's name suggests
in the heart of Edinburgh's bustling West End and A Room in the
Town is situated in the historic New Town.
Both restaurants
are run in the same styles and with the same themes, although
each has its own individual atmosphere and separate menus.
A Room in
the West End is situated below Teuchters bar in the basement of
the former Spanish Bistro and has been operating since May 2001.
The emphasis is on creating a relaxed and informal atmosphere.
Bright colours, simple wooden furniture and granite candles give
a warm welcoming feeling at all times without being in any way
stuffy. For those more intimate or private moments we have some
small alcove tables to the back of the restaurant.
A Room in
the Town is the older sister, opening in August 1998 the restaurant
occupies a slightly elevated position, set back from the main
road. This allows the sun to shine through the large single pane
windows during the day whilst the wooden fixtures and bright colours
create a darker, more romantic mood in the evenings.
When we started
out we had a gut feeling that a place serving fantastic food and
without the hindrance of paying a fortune for wine or high corkage
would work. Basically a place to go to that you could take your
wife or husband, mother and father, mates or work colleagues.
A place to go to where you feel instantly relaxed for any occasion.
The main reason
for having a BYOW policy is that you can relax, drink two bottles
and not worry about your final bill although we do take 2.00
corkage for every bottle opened (and 3.00 for the fizzy
stuff), the robbers that we are. Please note that our BYOW
policy is for wine and bubbly only.
It also makes
it a lot easier on the corporate entertainments pocket. If they
can phone Oddbins, have a case of wine delivered, we will happily
chill it and have it ready on the table when you arrive.
We are also
fully licensed so if you dont bring your own we have a small
wine list to suit all tastes and pockets (they are good wines
as we took long enough to taste them).
The bar was
christened "Teuchters" by John and Peter (who are both
from north of these parts). We know a lot of people from up North
who live in Edinburgh, so it was a way of paying homage to them.
"Teuchters" is pronounced "choochters" and
for those of you who dont know what a teuchter is there is an
interpretation up behind the malts behind the bar.
There is always
a copy of the Press and Journal, Dundee Courier
or John OGroats Journal in the bar as well as The Scotsman,
The Herald or Beano.
There is a
good selection of wines by the glass, champagne, draught beers
and cask ales including a dark porter beer called "Teuchters"
ale brewed by the Houston Brewery.
You can also
have a freshly brewed coffee or a filled ciabatta roll prepared
daily by the chefs downstairs in our new restaurant (imaginatively
we thought) titled "A Room in the West End". Working
under exactly the same concept as "A Room in the Town"
with our emphasis on modern Scottish cooking and BYOW.
See you soon.
Cheers!
